Making the most of marginal gains

James Ford featured on an Estates Gazette Property Podcast called ‘Making the most of marginal gains’, which looked into numerous issues around sustainability and climate change. The podcast focused on the question: When it comes to going green or fulfilling net zero carbon targets, what about the 80% of our built environment that already exists? Industry specialists discussed the issues and opportunities around retrofitting.

Euan Somerville of the Glasgow office recently completed all the requirements for his full MBA award at Edinburgh Business School.

Don't you know, pump it up; you’ve got to pump it up

Steve Wisby has a mere five minutes to talk about the rapid rise of heat pumps at Future Build 2020. The panel will seek to explore the consequences of heat pumps becoming more prevalent for heating, hot water and cooling applications in buildings across all scales. Steve will be focusing on the implications on the electricity grid, the public’s perception of residential heat pumps and the capital and operating cost of these. If you’re at the event, you can catch Steve’s talk on 4 March at 4pm.

Improving air quality in Camden

Chris Rush presented on air quality at an event for Camden Council and the Camden Climate Change Alliance. It was a free breakfast workshop for anyone interested in improving AQ in the area and formed part of the ‘Camden Town Low Emission Neighbourhood’ initiative. By speaking to shop owners in the local area, we looked at how they can improve their local air quality and reduce energy bills.

Our zero-carbon approach

Ian Chalk and Jon Nuttall have been giving ‘Zero Carbon’ presentations to fellow professionals to spread this important message. David Armstrong will be joining Jon to present to 5plus Architects about our net carbon approach, due to our signing of the emergency climate declaration.


Representatives from the Bournemouth also went to the ARCO Technology and Development Workshop. Mark Wilkinson and Jo Drane presented on Zero Carbon and Future Homes.

2020 vision

Nondas Loukas recently attended BAA’s ‘2020 Vision’ event for Birmingham’s built environment. As the Chair of CIBSE’s West Midlands Young Engineer Network, Nondas reminded us that the future is in our hands. You can view a snippet from his speech here.

Shining a light on daylight

Ruth Kelly Waskett spoke in Brussels at an EU Policy breakfast hosted by Lutron. She discussed daylight, lighting and occupant comfort.


She was also joined by Paul Cooper at the Alliance of Construction Networks' breakfast. They looked at the Department for Educations' Output Specification and discussed the merits of the document.

Inspiring the next generation

Plymouth recently attended the Marine Academy Plymouth Careers Conference to inspire and educate students aged 11-18. They showed off the VR tool kit with interactive videos and tempted the guests with some sweet treats of course.


Bournemouth also recently conducted mock interviews at Highcliffe School with Year 10 students. The students prepared a portfolio, which was discussed during the interview and consisted of a personal statement, awards and examples of work.


Tom DeBoeck, Chris Lane and Adele Gibb went into a school to inspire the next generation of engineers. They used VR to show how this technology can be used in our sector. This was part of Cardiff Commitment’s ‘Open Your Eyes Week’.


Finally, Luis Ruivo and Nikhilesh Patil from our Acoustics team visited Salford University for their Acoustics, Audio & Engineering Careers Fair.

Gold standard

We are now Gold-Leaf Members with the UK Green Building Council. We are collaborating with them to create a better built environment and supporting their energy performance targets. Achieving Net Zero is incredibly important and the movement has our full commitment.
