MEET OUR PEOPLE
Steven Halmshaw. Leeds.
Steven has joined us as a Programme Director based in our Leeds office: leading and managing key projects and initiatives to drive growth and deliver high-quality engineering solutions.

My background.
My journey began with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in Liverpool. After completing my studies, I returned to Yorkshire and secured my first professional role in the Property Department at Harrogate Borough Council. There, I gained invaluable experience learning how buildings function through numerous refurbishment and maintenance contracts, which laid the foundation for my career in engineering.
I worked at Waterman Group for 17 years, progressing through roles such as Principal Engineer, Associate Director, and Director in Leeds. I designed and delivered many great projects, such as Victoria Gate in Leeds for SRM, Siemens turbine blade factory in Hull, Odeon West End (a cinema 30m below ground), North Allerton Energy from Waste, as well as countless schools and healthcare projects across the North.
What motivates me as an engineer.
I am passionate about finding and communicating balance across multiple facets of engineering projects. This includes balancing fees and costs, aligning client needs with available resources, and integrating innovative technology with tried-and-tested engineering solutions. Achieving the right balance ensures successful, sustainable project outcomes.
In my new role...
I’m aiming to support the Leeds office, the wider business unit, and the company as a whole through transformative change in 2025 and beyond. I’m focused on growing the team both in Leeds and across the North of England, while also mentoring and developing people so they can benefit from my experience and reach their full potential.
What I get up to outside of work.
I treasure spending time with my young family. With three daughters aged 3, 7, and 10, life is lively and full of joy. At home, I’m completely outnumbered – even our cat is female! These pictures include my daughters on the most recent world book day, a trip to Whitby this summer, my youngest and our cat. And with my niece and nephew in the gaping Gill Cave this summer.
