Measuring social and environmental value.
VALUE STRATEGY RATINGS
Comparing the environmental and social value strategies of 218 companies
WHAT? UCL study by Junyu Chen, supported by Hoare Lea.
WHY? ESG is one of the simplest and most effective methods for measuring holistic sustainability but not much is known about the adoption of it across built-environment companies, which have been slow in integrating ESG in decision-making, compared to other industries.
HOW? A simple rating system was developed to survey, rate, and analyse the environmental and social value strategies of three professions.
On the radar.
1.
GOVERNMENT WON’T APPEAL ‘UNLAWFUL NET ZERO STRATEGY’ HIGH COURT RULING
The Good Law Project, Client Earth and Friends of the Earth delivered a landmark victory that ordered the existing strategy be fleshed out with the detail necessary for parliamentary – and public – scrutiny within the next 8 months.

GRAVITY: A GROWING ELECTRICITY GENERATION METHOD?
Offering some of the best characteristics of lithium batteries and pumped hydro storage, ‘gravitricity’ is a novel yet promising innovation that could enable existing grid infrastructure to go further in a renewable energy world.

PROCURING RENEWABLE ENERGY
A key aspect within the UKGBC’s Advancing Net Zero programme is developing a resilient renewable energy system. A new taskgroup to support the development of industry guidance for the procurement of renewable energy is now in place, and will offer better navigation of the options.

CHALLENGING CLIMATE MENTAL HEALTH
Social consequences from the climate emergency, such as climate anxiety, are expected to feature heavily at COP27. Yet the built environment can address these by building resilient, engaged, and empowered communities.

Conversation kickstarter.
“...We lift a weight using an electrically driven winch. The weight sits at the top of a mine shaft and is lowered down to discharge electricity back to the grid...”
“The basic idea is similar to the mechanism of a grandfather clock.”

“Change for better: one-time or continuous, large or small.”
Unfavourable social, environmental and economic conditions lead to behavioural risks and disease patterns that account for around half of all variation in health outcomes. What can we do to shape the conditions in the built environment to sustain health and wellbeing?

Thinking about.
Daylight in homes.
The BRE’s new Site Layout Planning for Daylight & Sunlight is now aligned with the latest standard on daylighting in buildings. However, problems associated with how the guidance is applied in residential developments remain, and mean daylighting experts must take more care than ever to explain study results and their interpretation.

Talking about.
Digital twin: the orchestra analogy.
There is lots of talk about digital twins in our industry, but many don’t understand how it differs to a building information model or the purpose behind having one. We are discussing digital twins using an orchestra analogy to illustrate to anyone in or outside our industry what they offer for both the net-zero-carbon and human-centric future built environment.

Caring about.
A better awareness of fire safety in timber construction.
The slow adoption of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in buildings is often down to a lack of understanding of its fire behaviour. Our work on Timber Square for Landsec was celebrated as the best Fire Engineering Strategy 2022 by SFPE UK Chapter, helping us to continue our aim of promoting its climate benefits while keeping building occupants safe.
