The challenge: To retain as much of the existing building fabric as possible, minimise embodied carbon and design around exceptionally small rooms. To develop a servicing strategy that wouldn’t compromise the ambitions for the interior of the spaces, especially given the low floor-to-floor heights. To carefully navigate major challenges around acoustics, vibration and fire, presented by working with CLT as the primary structure for the hotel extension.
